Welcome A/C Theatre Company to Phoenix and PHX Stages!

From our friends at A/C Theatre Company:

A/C Theatre Company has announced their inaugural season as the newest alternative theatre company in Phoenix. A/C Theatre Company produces alternative/commercial theatre focusing on contemporary stage musicals underrepresented in Phoenix. “A/CTC” presents accessibly cool theatre to connect both mainstream and progressive audiences, fostering the exchange of collaborative energy between artists and the community.

Founding directors Cassie Chilton, Kim Richard, Tim Shawver, and Tommy Strawser began collaborating on the company model after working together on another theatre project last summer. With four diverse backgrounds and the same passion for alternative theatre, they worked tirelessly to develop the organization’s model and business plan.

The company will present its first season at the Hardes Theatre at Phoenix Theatre at Central and McDowell. The first show of the season, Murder Ballad, will take place August 7-22, 2015, traditionally a quiet time in the Phoenix theatre community-lacking opportunities for artists and audiences alike. Murder Ballad, by Julia Jordan and Juliana Nash, is the dramatic story of a love triangle gone wrong. A steamy exploration of the complications of love, the compromises we make and the betrayals that undo us.

After participating in the statewide fundraising campaign Arizona Gives Day, the company is still developing funds for their first season. All financial gifts or in-kind donations are tax-deductible.

Murder Ballad

Book and Lyrics by Julia Jordan
Music and Lyrics by Juliana Nash

A steamy exploration of the complications of love, the compromises we make and the betrayals that undo us.

Murder Ballad is the dramatic story of a love triangle gone wrong centering on Sara, an uptown girl who seems to have it all, but whose downtown past lingers enticingly and dangerously in front of her. The title is taken from the phrase "murder ballad," a type of song that describes the details of a crime, from the murderer to the motive to the act itself.

Conceived by Jonathan Larson Award winner and two-time Susan Smith Blackburn Prize finalist Julia Jordan with book and lyrics by Jordan and music and lyrics by indie rock singer/songwriter Juliana Nash, Murder Ballad is a steamy and fun thriller with a razor's edge. Jordan, was interested in taking her idea of a murderous love triangle and turning it into a rock musical. She approached Nash, who had never written a musical before, and was inspired by the dark narrative qualities of the music.
