A daring musical by Stew & Heidi Rodewald that takes you on a journey across boundaries of place, identity and theatrical convention. Stew brings us the story of a young bohemian who charts a course for “the real” through sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll. Loaded with soulful lyrics and overflowing with passion, the show takes us from black middle-class America to Amsterdam, Berlin and beyond on a journey towards personal and artistic authenticity. Winner of the 2008 Tony Award for Best Book.

Character Breakdown

Narrator, Narrator. Incredibly strong musician/actor/singer. Charismatic, funny and strong.
Youth,18-35. Exciting, an artist at heart.
Mother, 35-60. Strong, vulnerable, warm, maternal.
Edwina / Marianna / Sudabey, Multi-character role, female, 20-45. Sexy, irresistible, dangerous.
Mr. Franklin / Joop / Mr. Venus, Multi-character role, male, 20-45. Energetic, with an edge.
Terry / Christophe / Hugo, Multi-character role, male, 20-40. Younger, a sense of naïveté and sense of humor.
Sherry / Renata / Desi, Multi-character role, female, 20-35. Young, sexy, edgy, vibrant with a vulnerability and strength.
All must be strong singers and actors.

Additional Info

Jeff Kennedy has worked on production staffs for Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine, and also has been as a music director for Broadway performers that include Pamela Myers, Carol Lawrence and Jubilant Sykes. An award-winning composer, arranger and producer, he has many recordings in gospel and choral music and traveled as a pianist for the Bill Gaither Trio and Gaither Vocal Band for a number of years, also accompanying vocal artists Sandi Patty, Larnelle Harris, and Michelle Pillar. While a teaching fellow at New York University, he was the founder/producer with Dr. Lowell Swortzell of the award-winning New Plays for Young Audiences reading series at the Provincetown Playhouse. As a performing artist, his recent productions include End of the Rainbow (actor and pianist, character of Anthony) at Phoenix Theatre; three years as the music director of the Phoenix Symphony/Phoenix Theatre concert productions of South Pacific, My Fair Lady and Oliver; and he received the 2014 AriZoni Award as Best Music Director for the Phoenix Theatre production of Avenue Q. He conducts for Oscar-winning actor Jamie Foxx in a tribute concert to Ray Charles that features a line-up of jazz all-stars. He has directed Arizona premiere productions that have included Floyd Collins and Myths and Hymns: Saturn Returns by Adam Guettel; James Joyce’s The Dead; the revue of music by John Bucchino It’s Only Life; the world premiere of Daniel Lentz’s Café Desire (also performed for the Other Minds Festival in San Francisco) and the world premiere live performance of Handel’s Messiah: A Soulful Celebration at Phoenix’s Orpheum Theatre.
