The play takes place on Labor day Weekend in the adjoined backyards of two middle-aged women. In one house lives Flo Owens, with with her two maturing daughters, Madge and Millie, and a boarder, Rosemary, a spinster school teacher. The other house belongs to Helen Potts, who lives with her elderly and invalid mother. Into this female atmosphere comes a young man named Hal Carter, whose animal vitality seriously upsets the entire group. While Helen embraces the excitement Hal brings on a hot summer day, Flo is wary of anything that might derail her daughters' futures. Madge, bored with being "the pretty one", risks her chances for a wealthy marriage when Hal arrives on the scene. Her sister, Millie, hovers on the brink of transformation through the stranger's brief attention. And Rosemary is spurred to demand change in her casual relationship with her beau.
