The Bridge Initiative's Second National New Works Contest

The Bridge Initiative: Women in Theatre is launching its second national new work contest for plays and musicals penned by women. The competition winner will be in residence for a developmental workshop at Mesa Community College February 21st-26th, 2017.

The work will then receive readings at three additional theatre companies across the country. The submission deadline is August 1st, and the winner will be announced January 1st, 2017.

The details for the contest are on our homepage bridgeinit.com and below. Info can be obtained at info@bridgeinit.com. Submissions to bridgeplaywright@gmail.com

Submission instructions:  Female playwrights only. The play must not have been fully produced prior to this contest and there must not be any rights attached to the script.  Submit online to bridgeplaywright@gmail.com. Application must include 1) a separate resume with all contact information, 2) separate cover letter that addresses your intended vision of process for the development of your play, 3) a separate list of three theatre work-related references with their contact information, and 4) a full script in pdf format that is completely scrubbed (no name or contact information) for the blind reading process. Musical submissions with artistic teams that are at least 50% female will be accepted and must include recorded samples of at least three songs, in addition to the materials described above. Failure to follow these directions may disqualify your play or musical. If you have any questions, please contact The Bridge Initiative: Women in Arizona Theatre at info@bridgeinit.com.

Deadline: August 1, 2016.

The Bridge Initiative's first playwriting award generated the world premiere production of Kat Ramsburg's Anatomy of a Hug, a play which has since been picked up by other companies nationwide. This year's contest does not promise a production, but The Bridge Initiative and other companies involved are looking for a script to actively develop, with production as a potential end goal in future seasons.

As part of its mission, The Bridge Initiative is working to cultivate relationships with other artists. They partnered with Ms. Conceived Shakespeare to present a well-received gender-swapped reading of Shakespeare's Richard II in April. For the writing contest, they are teaming up with NYC-based InProximity theatre (http://inproximitytheatre.org/), Ohio-based Magnolia Theatre Company (http://www.magnoliatheatrecompany.com/), and Massachusetts-based WAMTheatre Company (http://www.wamtheatre.com/) who are all committed to readings of the winning script.

The Bridge Initiative: Women in Theatre aims to incubate and celebrate female theatre artists, bridging the divide between academia and the professional world, with an emphasis on developing new work by female writers and presenting Southwestern premieres. Their efforts have been celebrated by Arizona Commission on the Arts as well as local and national media outlets.
