The iconic Pulitzer Prize-winning musical RENT went on to become an international phenomenon from its Off-Broadway beginnings. Fans everywhere relate to the show’s powerful themes and stories, and have connected with the characters and the actors who portrayed them.

As fans and theatergoers celebrate 20 years of RENT, the original “Mark Cohen” brings his hit solo concert to Scottsdale for one night only!

Anthony Rapp in Concert is a brand-new show featuring this star of RENT, If/Then and many more Broadway hits and films. With full band, including original RENT musicians, Anthony performs both original tunes and songs that have influenced their lives, from the rock world to Broadway hits. The concert also features RENT songs that brought Anthony to international fame.

Most recently, Anthony returned from the national tour of If/Then, repeating the role he originated on Broadway opposite RENT-mate Idina Menzel. In addition, Anthony has toured the country in concert and in his autobiographical musical, Without You, based on his book of the same name.

Andrew Lloyd Weber’s musical re-telling of Joseph’s biblical story is a little bit country, a little bit rock n’ roll! The Biblical saga of Joseph and his coat of many colors comes to vibrant life in this delightful musical parable. Joseph, his father’s favorite son, is a boy blessed with prophetic dreams. When he is sold into slavery by his jealous brothers and taken to Egypt, Joseph endures a series of adventures in which his spirit and humanity are continually challenged. He is purchased by Potiphar where thwarting advances from Potiphar’s wife lands him in jail.

When news of Joseph’s gift to interpret dreams reaches the Pharaoh (wryly and riotously depicted as Elvis), Joseph is well on his way to becoming second in command. Eventually his brothers, having suffered greatly, unknowingly find themselves groveling at the feet of the brother they betrayed but no longer recognize. After testing their integrity, Joseph reveals himself leading to a heartfelt reconciliation of the sons of Israel. Set to an engaging cornucopia of musical styles, from country-western and calypso to bubble-gum pop and rock ‘n’ roll, this Old Testament tale emerges both timely and timeless.

CASTING:
Narrator (Stage age 18+): The Narrator is a storyteller who is sharing a wonderful tale with the children, their families and the wider audience. She needs to be a strong singer who can draw the audience into the saga of Joseph and his brothers, showing what shapes them into the men they were destined to become. (Vocal Range – Low F# to High G)

Mrs. Potiphar (Stage age 30+): Mrs. Potiphar is an indulgent woman who likes to get her own way, and thinks first and foremost about her own personal gratification. She needs to be a confident mover/dancer, who is comfortable moving in a seductive manner. She will also be a part of the women’s chorus.

10 Women: varying age, size, and ethnicity for the roles of wives, mothers, handmaidens, featured dancers, and chorus.

Joseph: (Stage age – 18+) Joseph is the male lead. He needs to be able to mature from ~18 to 40ish over the course of the show. Joseph begins as a cocky teenager who, through dealing with life’s adversities, becomes a humble man and a true leader. He needs to be a strong singer and actor. (Vocal Range – Low A to High G)

Jacob: (Stage age – 50+) Jacob is the father of Joseph and his 11 brothers. He clearly favors Joseph as the first son of his favorite wife, unwittingly causing the friction that exists between Joseph and his brothers. Jacob needs to be a good actor, who can sing and move reasonably well. He may also be a part of the men’s chorus. (Vocal Range – Low A to C)

11 brothers: Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Napthali, Issachar, Asher, Dan, Zebulon, Gad, Benjamin & Judah (Stage ages 16 – 30s)
Joseph’s 11 brothers, who were born of 4 different mothers (two wives and two handmaidens), are jealous of Joseph and the fact that he is clearly their father’s favorite son. As brothers they band together and gang up on Joseph to get rid of him thinking it will make their lives better. Some brothers may double as other male roles, depending on need. All need to be strong singers, as well as good dancers and actors.

Reuben: sings “One More Angel in Heaven” – (Vocal Range – Low B to High F)

Simeon: sings “Those Canaan Days” – (Vocal Range – C to High Eb)

Judah: sings “Benjamin Calypso” – (Vocal Range – F to High F)

Pharaoh: (Stage age 30s/40s) Pharaoh is the leader of Egypt and a very self-important man. He sings an Elvis-style song, “Song of the King” and is very comfortable having adoring fans. He needs to be a strong singer and actor and a good dancer/mover. (Vocal Range – Low B to High G#)

Potiphar: (Stage age 40+) Potiphar is a wealthy, self-indulgent man. He needs to be a strong actor as well as a good singer. (Vocal Range – D to B)

Butler & Baker: (Stage Age 25+) The Butler and the Baker both work for the Pharaoh. They need be good singers and will also be part of the chorus.

Children’s Roles: 20–25 Chorus roles for boys and girls (stage ages 8-15) The chorus will be on stage for the majority of the show.

THE HOUSE OF ILLUSIO - November 11 - November 20, 2016

THE HOUSE OF ILLUSIO is an original musical featuring a book by Paco Madden and Javier Stefano De Vita with Lyrics also by De Vita and music by James Melberg.

This modern and experimental piece tells the story of a man who is lost in his own imagination. He is tormented by the “the voices” inside his head and pursues his freedom from agony. The audience will experience a magical journey through a compilation of eight different characters performed by one actor. The piece, creatively staged in and presented at a private residence, incorporates the use of masks, puppetry, live music and media in its design.

Javier Stefano De Vita is a Venezuelan actor, director, and producer. As an ASU MFA student he has been seen in such plays as, She Kills Monsters (2016), The Hour we Knew Nothing of Each Other [DE/AS]cending (2015); also in the capstone films, Nun Cop (2015) and Receiver (2016). He participated in the IMDB film Witch Child (2016), and played the role of Che in the musical EVITA with the Tuscany Theatre Company (2015), Soldier Felix Rodriguez in El Che by Marcelino Quinonez, and he was also part of the cast of MET’s production of Sweeney Todd (both in 2016). His work in Venezuela has included recognition as a director, producer and designer for many plays, important international theater festivals and several academic artistic projects focused on J. Grotowski's legacy.

David Stephens offers Special Puppet Performance and Puppet Manipulation Master Class

Former Sesame Street Puppeteer and Jim Henson Award-winner David Stephens returns to Theater Works for a special performance and a Master Class. On Saturday, November 19, 2016 at 10:30am all ages are invited to enjoy “The Adventures of the Gingerbread Man”, the telling of the classic tale with puppets. The following day, Sunday, November 20, 2016 from 1:00 until 4:00 pm, Stephens presents a Master Class on Puppet Construction and Manipulation. Both take place at the Peoria Center for the Performing Arts (8355 W. Peoria Avenue, Peoria, AZ 85345).

“Run, run, run as fast as you can,” says the star of The Adventures of the Gingerbread Man. In this 40 minute show, you’ll follow this little troublemaker as he makes narrow escapes from unsuspecting cookie lovers. You’ll also meet Redina, a little red hen who learns how to follow directions in a retelling of the classic story, The Little Red Hen. Friend Gripe and Bicker learn the value of working together when they are granted three wishes in a new version of The Three Wishes. Lots of characters to meet in this wacky, fun-filled show. Intended for all ages. Tickets are $12 (includes a $2 ticket fee).

During the Puppet Construction and Manipulation Master Class, instructor David Stephens will guide students through the basics of foam puppet construction and manipulation. Each student will create a simple Muppet-style hand-and-rod puppet and then learn the basic fundamentals of performance including lip-sync, eye focus, and character development. Cost is $125.00 and includes materials to make your own puppet. Master Class intended for ages 16-Adult.

Stephens, a professional puppeteer for over 20 years, has created and performed characters for his own Atlanta-based company, All Hands Productions. He has also been a Muppet performer on Sesame Street and The Jim Henson Company. Some of his past work is now part of the Center for Puppetry Arts’ Global Collection. Stephens’ one-man show, “Billy Goats Gruff and Other Stuff,” which toured libraries in his home state of Alabama, was awarded a 2004 UNIMA-USA (Union Internationale de la Marionette) Citation of Excellence. Created by Jim Henson, founder of the US chapter of UNIMA, the Citations honor outstanding works in the art of puppetry. With this award, Stephens joined the ranks with some of puppetry's most exceptional practitioners. He also worked as a puppet assistant for several Sesame Street Home Video productions (Abby Caddabby In Wonderland and Think Green 2008) and became a day-player on season 39 of Sesame Street, performing Anything Muppets.

Veterans Bob Wallace and Phil Davis have a successful song-and-dance act after World War II. With romance in mind, the two follow a duo of beautiful singing sisters en route to their Christmas show at a Vermont lodge, which just happens to be owned by Bob and Phil's former army commander. The dazzling score features well known standards including Blue Skies, I Love A Piano, How Deep Is the Ocean and the perennial favorite, White Christmas. WHITE CHRISTMAS is an uplifting musical worthy of year-round productions.

ASU Gammage has been recognized by The Downtown Tempe Authority during it’s State of Downtown & Impact Awards

Gammage was honored with the Economic Impact Award.

The award is given to businesses, corporations, or individuals that make great contributions to Downtown Tempe.

The ASU Gammage 2015-2016 Desert Schools Broadway Across America/ Arizona season that wrapped up this summer resulted in an estimated $100 million of economic impact for the Valley of the Sun during its fiscal year that ended June 30, 2016.

The magic of Broadway and the arts not only enrich the community culturally but also play a critical
role in the economic vitality of the region. Every year, more than 400,000 people flock to Tempe’s
Frank Lloyd Wright designed ASU Gammage to see Broadway. The majority of theater-goers are
Valley residents but also includes ticket buyers in every county in Arizona, as well as out-of-state and
patrons coming up from Mexico to see Broadway at ASU Gammage.

Based on research by The Broadway League, since 2006 ASU Gammage has created more than
$550 million of economic impact for Arizona.

"...Pippin...tells the simple and often-told tale of someone searching for their place in life. Schwartz's score includes many memorable tunes, and Greasepaint Youth Theatre's production features an exceptional group of talented youth actors that bring plenty of magic to the show. ...The plot ... tells the tale of naive young prince Pippin who has just returned home after getting his education. ...not sure how he can prove himself, believes that going to battle will do just that, and so begins the first of many quests for Pippin to find his way in life. ...Pippin still believes he is simply an "extra ordinary" man with an unfulfilled life. It is an interesting story about a young man on the search for his purpose in life—a life in which living in a castle and being wealthy may not be what is best, with Pippin instead preferring a life of modesty and "simple joys." While the plot is intriguing, the book by Roger O. Hirson leaves a little to be desired. It bogs down a bit in the second act and has an ending that, while interesting, still feels a bit unfinished, especially in how the Leading Player keeps promising us a spectacular ending that isn't really that spectacular. Fortunately, the pop-rock score by Stephen Schwartz is wonderful, with several showstoppers including "Corner of the Sky," "Simple Joys," and "Morning Glow." Nathan Sheppard makes an exceptional Pippin who is full of charm, awkwardness, and a sweet naiveté. ...Sheppard's pure, strong voice excels on Pippin's many songs. Shawn Wong is equally good as the playful and taunting Leading Player. The cast also includes Liam Thibeault and Johnna Watson as Charlemagne and Fastrada. Both are very good, with Thibeault instilling a regal and forceful tone to the fun King and Watson a joy as his conniving second wife. ...All of the cast have exceptional singing voices which show off both the depth and wit in Schwartz's lyrics.Director Beth Reynolds does a very good job of keeping the pace moving steadily forward and she uses the large ensemble cast quite effectively. Choreographer April Rozier's energetic steps are basic enough for the ensemble to navigate, and she includes specialized dances for the more talented dancers, with Ally Chisenski and Hallie Reggio delivering some exceptional Fosse moves....Pippin isn't a perfect show, but it does have an excellent score by Schwartz that helps flesh out this musical into an upbeat and thrilling story of self-discovery. With a talented cast featuring some of the Valley's most gifted young actors, Greasepaint Youth Theatre's production is a joyful experience with many magical and memorable moments." -Gil Benbrook, Talkin' Broadway (click here to read the complete review)

AUDITIONS for the title role of SYLVIA to be held at Theater Works in Peoria AZ on Tuesday, Nov 1st from 11 - 2pm, Wednesday, Nov 2nd from 12 - 3 pm, and Thursday, Nov 4th from 4 - 7 pm.

audition notice - ON GOLDEN POND - Ghostlight Theatre - November 12

Auditions for On Golden Pond will take place on Sat. Nov 12th at 3pm at Ghostlight Theatre.

Come prepared to perform cold reads. You can bring a monologue to present if you would like.

Cast:

Norman Thayer - Norman is a retired college professor, who describes himself as being "older than dirt." He is set in his ways, and hard to get along with. He has a dry wit, and he enjoys having fun at others' expense. He also uses his wit and intellect to mask his growing infirmities.

Ethel Thayer - Ethel is Norman's wife, and is several years younger than Norman. She is happy, outgoing, and content. Intelligent and well grounded, she has been content to defer to Norman on many issues without losing her own identity

Chelsea Thayer Wayne - The only daughter of Norman and Ethel, she has a difficult relationship with her parents. She has never gotten along with Norman, and she feels that Ethel always takes Norman's side of things.

Billy Ray - The dentist to whom Chelsea is engaged. Bill has a thirteen year old son, Billy. Prior to becoming a teenager, Billy has spent more time with his mother than with Bill. Billy will now be living with his father, who is becoming very satisfied with new-found changes in his life, both on personal and professional fronts.

Charlie Martin - A native of Golden Pond, Maine. He is close in age to Chelsea, and has always liked her. Growing up, he saw Chelsea as a pretty, mysterious city girl, and he was fascinated with her. He is the mailman for Golden Pond, having taken over those duties from his uncle.

Bill Ray Jr. - Thirteen years old, but precocious and worldly for his age. Billy is intelligent, but suspicious and guarded. At this point in his life, he has not spent a lot of time with his father, or any male role model. Billy recognizes that he has been passed back and forth between his parents out of necessity, but has not really been "raised" by either of them.

The Bridge Initiative Announces Playwright Semifinalists

From our friends at the Bridge Initiative:

With a total submission tally of close to 170 plays and musicals, The Bridge Initiative has announced 40 plays as semifinalists for this year's new work contest. The semifinalists hail from as far away as Australia, as well as more than ten states, with four playwrights local to Arizona.

The next step for the semifinalists will be another judging round. Finalists will be announced by December 1^st, with the winner announcement in January 2017. Readers are theatre practitioners from both Arizona and nationwide who judge the plays on criteria such as originality, voice, character complexity, and X factor.

The winning playwright will be in residence at Mesa Community College to workshop her play with a New York-based director and local Arizona dramaturg and actors February 21-26. Details on auditions and other information about the workshop to be announced in January.
